What to do First:
How to read an electric meter
When most of us receive our energy bill, we immediately start telling ourselves that next month we must
remember to switch off the lights, turn the ac/heater up or down,  unplug things, etc..., but never really
ask the important question.
How did they know the amount of electricity I used? Though it is why this
step is so important, electric companies do not pull an amount out of thin air. No! They use that box on
the side of your house (not always accurately) known as an
"electric meter." This intimidating device
measures how much electricity our home is using, and most of us don't know how to read it! By learning
how to read your electric meter, you can begin your quest for lowering the energy bill!
Make this step
priority!!!!
Every other step revolves around knowing how much electricity you really are using.

Small Things Add Up!
So far, 90% of your electricity usage has been explored. What about the other 10%? Your using .
09% of that energy right now by exploring our site!
Computers, printers, televisions, stereos,
alarm clocks, cable or satellite boxes, DVD players, etc... Basically anything plugged into the wall is
drawing some kind of energy. Even when certain items are turned off or not in use, they can draw
what is called
phantom or vampire power. Examples of this are battery charges for your phone,
cordless tool
s, or laptop. Also, televisions and audio/visual equipment use stand-by power to power
clocks or keep these items warm for quick turn-on features.
Quick Test: Count how many things are plugged in around your home. Make sure you include the garage!
Pretty surprising huh? How many was there? 25....50....100? More than there should be probably. While everything plugged in does not necessarily
draw energy, a majority of it does, and though the cost is minimal per item ($0.01 or less a day); combine that with all of the things you counted. You
can easily be spending $1 a day or $30 a month foolishly. Below are some suggestions and ideas on how to cut out this waste.
Alarm Clocks - Though a hassle to set it every night, unplug it after you get up! Does an empty room care what time it is?
T.V.s, DVD players, VCRs, etc... - Do you really need to display the time on 3 different pieces of equipment while you are
at work or running errands? Your audio/visual equipment uses juice by just being plugged in!

Computers - Best option is to shut-down after each use, but the alternative is to set it in sleep mode. Printers, Monitors,
or any other external device needs to be unplugged. Why waste energy when you are not using these items?
Battery Chargers - Any chargers, such as cell phone or camera, needs to be unplugged when not in use. Even when these
tools are not in use, they are still drawing "phantom" energy. I take my laptop and phone to work with me and,
shhhhh, I
charge them there.

Hair Dryers, Curling Irons, Electric Razors, etc... - Take a look at these items. Even when off, they may have a little
indicator light showing you they are off, or in this case, wasting electricity to tell you they are off. With a electric razor,
this light is telling you that I am wasting electricity to tell you that it is full of electricity! Unplug them all!
Electric Garage Door Stop Sensors - These little sensors with the invisible trip line they create are more of a hurdle than
helpful. How many times do you leap over these when racing the closing garage door? This safety feature draws energy 24
hours a day! We have disconnected ours and have not closed the garage door on our vehicle yet!

Are you seeing the trend here? Walk around the home and unplug things not in use. Use surge protectors or electrical
strips for a quick press of a switch for multiple items.
For the people
with pools or hot
tubs, I didn't
forget about you!

Finally, make a plan and stick to it!
TheFoosers know that not all of these tips will fit your lifestyle or situation, but making one or two
of  these changes
in your home can make a significant difference! We also know how difficult it is to
get every person in a home to adapt to these changes, but we accomplished this by implementing a
plan with rewards. With 4 people in our home, a daily checklist was split amongst
us to complete.
When we received the monthly bill, we split the savings (
taken from the $510 bill we used to have)
four ways. Believe us, household members will come up with ways you never thought possible to
make that energy bill less!
