Save Money on Washing Clothes by Christopher Foos
It is easy for us just to tell you to go out and buy a
$600 - $2,000 dollar, front-loading, energy star rated
washing machine, but the truth is, until we see our
energy bills or other expenses drop, most of us can
not afford the upfront money. Besides, bang for
your buck, a new washing machine will take 2 to 3
years to pay for itself. This is not a great investment
unless you are in the market for a new washing
machine now. If that is the case, buy a front-loading
washing machine! If still stuck with the old
top-loading model (lucky front-loader owners too),
follow the tips below to conserve electricity
consumption of the washing machine and save
money today.
COLD WATER! Cold water gets the job done while saving energy on heating water! It is true! Most modern laundry
detergents today do their magic at any temperature range. So make the most of this by saving electricity and money on
washing your clothes in cold water.
FULL LOADS! Wait until you have full loads before washing your laundry. Doing a half load of laundry does not use
half the energy!
Consider buying more clothes if you find yourself without underwear, socks, or bras. This may cause you to wash a
small load out of necessity. What is better? A comfy pair of new socks, or spending that money with the electric
company?

Hand Wash! Washing clothes in the washing machine is the first option because it’s quick, efficient and easy.
But, there are times when washing clothes by hand may be the best option; especially if the clothes are delicate,
are needed soon or if you want to save money!
There is something relaxing about sitting outside on a nice day with a 5-gallon bucket, a plunger, and a chair. We
enjoy the day, get a little exercise, make our clothes extra clean, and best of all, SAVE MONEY!

PRE-SOAK! Let your clothes soak in soapy water for awhile before running the washer. Some machines have a soak
option. Allow the soap to do its work instead of the washer!
PRE-TREAT STAINS! Before you wash, examine your clothes for stains, and treat the stains before you wash.
Otherwise, you are more likely going to wash that item again or ruin it!
LOWER THE WASH CYCLE! Now that you treated the stains and soaked your clothes, adjust the wash cycle down. 6
minutes of washing will do the same job as a 20 minute cycle with 30% less energy used!
LOWER THE SPEED! All the speed control does is use more electricity to make your clothes dizzier. Delicate is the
ideal speed, Normal is ok, but avoid the "HEAVY DUTY" speed cycle. This speed can raise your energy usage by 20%!
SQUEEZE OUT THE SAVINGS! Wring out your laundry before the "rinse cycle" to add another 10% savings. Soaked
clothes uses more of your washer's energy to spin those heavy items. By quickly wringing them out in the sink saves the
washer the work, and helps for the next section, the dryer!

Like mentioned above, if you are buying a new washing machine, buy a front loading washer. They use
2/3 less water, which in return, it does not use as much electricity to power it. If you are just wanting
to save money on your electricity bill now, this investment will take a couple of years before the savings
will be seen.
