How to Save Money on Groceries at Kroger by Cynthia Gilliam
Most veteran "couponers" and regular Kroger shoppers probably already know that the
supermarket is systematically eliminating the practice of "doubling" and "tripling" coupons across
the United States, but don't let that stop you from shopping at this great grocery store! There
are still some great savings to take advantage of! You just need to know some simple tips and
tricks on how to save money on your groceries at Kroger, and this site was created just for that
purpose. Please continue reading to be a Kroger shopping PRO!
Please Note - These tips and tricks are not exclusive to Kroger, and can be adapted to most any
grocery store in your area. Saving money on groceries is not a RICH thing or a POOR thing, it is a
SMART thing!
BEFORE planning your shopping trip, make sure you go to the store's customer service desk
BEFORE hand, and sign-up for a FREE Kroger Plus Card. This is essential to saving money at
Kroger! You will need to use this card every single time you shop. You need the card in order
to get sale prices and to take advantage of any promotions Kroger has going on.
Another great advantage to the Kroger Plus Card is that you earn points that can be used to
save money on fuel at Kroger, or select Shell gas stations. If you spend $100 on groceries
then you earn 100 points. 100 points = 10¢ off per gallon of fuel for each fill-up. You can read
more about the fuel program on the Kroger website.
After getting home with your Kroger card, go to Kroger's web site to register your card for even more benefits. You will definitely want to
include your mailing address because they frequently mail out coupons! You will receive coupon booklets periodically, as well as
personalized coupons based on your shopping habits (these usually include coupons for a free product or two!). Lastly, which we discuss
more below, you can load coupons right onto the card (now you see why we said BEFORE you plan your shopping trip).
Please Note - Most grocery stores these days (retail and restuarants too) have their own version of a rewards card, and it is always a good
idea to get one; even if you don't shop there much! You might be surprised come Christmas time!
2.
Get Prepared! This is quite a large step, so we designated an entire page to it. It covers general
grocery store shopping preparation, and is very informative. Click here to check it out!
In a nutshell, for Kroger shoppers, by grabbing the Kroger weekly circular, finding what is on
sale, matching coupons, and designing your grocery list around that, you will find that this step
is the most crucial to saving money on your groceries at Kroger.
Please Note - CouponMom.com is a great site to help supplement this step. The site has a
section "Grocery Deals By State" that matches sales with coupons, and tells you where to find
the coupons!
3.
Look for Manager's Special - Another thing to look for at Kroger
is manager’s specials (notice the sticker on the example to the
left)! I frequently see produce, baked goods, dairy, and meat
marked down in order to sell quickly. These items are usually
nearing their expiration date, so plan to use them quickly if you
buy them. Be sure to inspect the items carefully so you don’t
buy an item that has already spoiled. Find out which day the
products are marked down and try to shop on those days to get
the best selection.
Best part is, you can use a coupon along with it!!!!!!
4.
Coupons - Kroger DOES accept the following types of coupons (even if your store does not
triple or double anymore).
1. Store coupons, including e-coupons, printables, in-ad, and home mailer coupons
2. Manufacturer coupons, including e-coupons and printables
Guidelines and limits regarding coupon usage:
- Kroger doubles coupons in some areas. The deals listed on In Good Cents assume
Kroger is doubling all coupons up to $0.50. Please check your local Kroger to see if
your Kroger doubles coupons and which coupons qualify
- Kroger will accept one manufacturer and one Kroger-issued coupon for a single item
at time of purchase (unless otherwise prohibited)

- Coupon value will be reduced if exceeds the value of the item after discounts and coupons applied (e.g. $1 coupons will be reduced
to $0.99 when purchasing a $0.99 item)
- Kroger will not accept Internet coupons for more than 75% of the product’s value without advanced notice
- Kroger will reject internet coupons if they appear blurry, altered, duplicated, or out of proportion
- Kroger stores may alter their local coupon policy, so store policies may vary
Please Note - For general information on coupons click here for the Getting Prepared page or check out one of the related articles below

5.
Mega Events - Though this should be considered when completing step 2,
there was enough information about "Mega Events" to warrant its own
step!
Kroger has amazing sales. They usually have “Mega Events” about once a
month as well as some great 10/$10 sales. By pairing your coupons with
the sale prices, you can get some great bargains!
Mega Events are sales that require the purchase of a certain number of items to get savings. It’s usually something along the lines of “Buy 10
participating items and save $5 instantly.” There are typically a ton of items included in the sale at various prices, and you can mix & match
the different products. In this example, you will need to buy 10 items exactly to the advertised prices. You can buy more than 10, but you will
have to buy in groups of 10. So, if you bought 20, you will receive (2) $5 savings on your receipt. If you buy 11, then you will pay $0.50 more
for the 11th item. This event is a great way to stock-up on groceries! Say you have 10 $0.50 off coupons for Kraft Mac & Cheese, it is on sale
for $1 a box, and part of the buy 10 and save $5. At the checkout, it totals $10. You give them your Plus Card, and the total is now $5 because
of the Mega Event. Last, you hand them your coupons, and now the total is zero! You now have 10 boxes of macaroni and cheese for nothing!
Understand that is a rare occurrence, but realistically you can consistently buy products like this one for just pennies when you use mega
events and coupons together!

6.
Price Match Guarantee - Kroger has a Scan Right Guarantee that is often found in-store on signs. It
states that if a product rings up at a price different from the one listed in-store or in-ad, they must
give you that product FREE and every additional identical purchase will be adjusted to the marked or
in-ad price. Rain Checks If any item you were planning on purchasing is out of stock, don't forget to
ask for a rain check, so that you can still get the good deal when the item is back in stock!
Please Note - No matter what supermarket you are shopping at, it is always a good idea to keep track
of what the cashier is scanning. You would be surprised how many pricing errors there are!
7.
Reusable Shopping Bags Save - Have you ever noticed the big brown bin at the
entrance to Kroger? It is for recycling your plastic bags! So, never throw away those
extra plastic bags! Just drop them off in the bin, on your way into Kroger!
Kroger also gives you a 3 cent credit for reusing your own bags. Doing this will help
you to save a few cents (every penny counts in my Family). And it is better for the
environment!
